South Florida Paralegal Association, Inc. (SFPA), previously known as Dade Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. (DALA), was formed in 1979 by a group of paralegals interested in creating a local organization. Although state and national associations exist, the paralegals in South Florida felt the need for a local organization in order to address the problems of paralegals in our area, as well as to provide a local forum for ideas and information which would be immediately accessible.

In 1983, SFPA became an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. (NALA). Our SFPA representative attends NALA's annual meetings and keeps us apprised of news, events and information around the country apropos to our local group.

In 2008, SFPA became an affiliate of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, Inc. (NFPA). Our SFPA delegates attend NFPA's annual meetings to work together with other delegates to write the policy for NFPA, as well as networking with like-minded paralegal professionals on various topics, but most specifically on paralegal regulation.

The primary aim of SFPA is to enhance the competence, and to strive for the acceptance and effective use of professional paralegals in the South Florida area. To help achieve these goals, SFPA's programs and meetings are geared toward the continuing education of its members.

SFPA also works with local bar associations to exchange ideas and information which will help the paralegals and the attorney work together in the most productive manner.
