SFPA will be conducting a review course for the May 2013 window.  The review begins with orientation on Feb. 16, 2013 and ends with a mock exam on April 27, 2013.  Miami-Dade College (Wolfson Campus) will be hosting the exam in May.

SFPA is currently looking into concurrently offering a review course for the NFPA PCCE (Paralegal Core Compentency Exam).  We will send out an email when official.

At the NALA convention, they focused on using mindmaps - a brainstorming tool / graphic device where you plot a main goal and branch out the necessary steps to achieve the goal.  For further information, please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map.

Two significant changes to the bylaws were recommended by the Board and passed by NALA members at the recent convention.

The first change replaced the term “legal assistant” with “paralegal”; on the corollary, references to the CLA will be replaced with CP.  Though, it is still one’s choice to call him/herself legal assistant or paralegal.  The second, with more profound effect, is that the chairs of the CP and ACP certifying boards will now become non-voting members of the Board.  This was done to avoid possible conflict of interests to satisfy a requirement by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).  NALA has submitted an application to the Commission to have the CP and ACP exams accredited for compliance with NCAA standards.  Results of the application will be known later in the year.

Yesterday Lisa conducted the Orientation for our summer Review Course.  I'm looking forward to hosting the meeting next time.  And if all goes well, I'll be a CP by then.  This should be interesting.  Not only am I coordinating the Review Course, I'm also sitting in on the courses.  We are so ethical;  in case anybody asks, yes I paid my fees just like everybody else.  So this summer will be a busy one.  Plus I got the NALA convention at the end of July.  Omaha here we come.  The steaks better be good!

It's a good group of attendees.  The instructors should enjoy the group.

At their May meeting, The Florida Bar's Board of Governors approved Facebook pages and Twitter accounts for each section and division of the Bar (except for committees). Comments will be disabled until further review in six months. According to the Bar News, "Sections may not "follow" other Twitter accounts ... never use Twitter to reply to someone, make editorial comments, engage in chatter, or anything else except linking back to a page on our website(s)."

Current sections which have Facebook pages include the Business Law, Entertainment Arts & Sport Law, Health Law, International Law, Tax and Trial Lawyer sections and the Young Lawyers Division and its Law Student Division.

Well, today was the last full day of the convention.  This morning SFPA had an affiliate association booth, along with about 25 other associations.  It was really nice being able to talk and exchange ideas with other paralegal associations.  It was nice to see how they deal of memberships, seminars and fund raising.  It was particularly nice to see that we do some things other associations haven't even thought of.  Most of the associations, for example, also hold CP Exam reviews, but they are either 1 day or 2.  Our review is 10 Saturdays.  I collected brochures and newsletters for every association which had them available.  I wanted to share the ideas and maybe we can utilize some of them to update our look.  I also took some pictures of the various booths which I will give to Jessica for her newsletter.

After the affiliate exchange this morning, NALA held its annual membership meeting.  Awards were given to various associations.  One of the awards was given to the president of the Mississippi Paralegal Association for her work in moving the association to the internet with their simulcast of their monthly seminars, as well as the other cyberspace movements she has initiated.

Later this evening we will have the closing reception with the installation of the newly elected officers.  Tomorrow morning are the final seminars but no additional NALA business.

It has truly been a very rewarding convention.  I met other NALA Liaisons and we talked about things we are doing and things they are doing.  I hope that we all learned from each other. I know that I certainly have some new ideas.  Hopefully, our association can adopt some of the ideas that I have posted or will bring back with me.

    Anyway, good night from Dallas.
